A few years ago, as part of a hobby project I discovered the power of parametric modelling using Grasshopper software. It is based on a simple idea. Instead of drawing objects by hand one uses geometric (and other) functions to model things up. Model rebuilds itself instantly when you change input parameters, most basic of which can be object dimensions. Thanks to a powerful development community Grasshopper has become the most popular parametric tool for modeling geometry, physics and much more - even solar energy solutions!
Grasshopper software also has plug-ins to translate modelled shapes directly into robot movements - this is how I made KUKA three meters long industrial robotic arm to create objects by 3D printing and cutting based on Grasshopper models.
